This follows on from Glover Fan's thread, Guide for when to replace worn bike components?. Several posters mentioned renewing chains at or around the 0.75 mark on the chain wear indicator. I know that there are many variables which will affect chain wear (e.g. winter commuting, lack of maintenance, etc.) but if you'd just fitted a new chain, how many miles would you ride before thinking to check for wear?

I check mine every two or three weeks roughly (more when the chain is old). It really is worth keeping an eye on chain wear and replacing at the 0.75 mark promptly, a 9 speed dura-ace chain is £17.00, chainwheels and cassettes a LOT more. A well looked after chain will last quite a long time, the chain on my dawes galaxy did 3000km including through the worst of the salty gritty winter. The chain on my Bianchi which hardly ever sees rain has done 1500km and still looks like new. Your chains will last a long time if you use the "mickle method" of cleaning and lubrication

I bought a chain wear tool that slots into the chain.

The instructions state replace at 0.75 for alloy sprockets and at 1.0 for steel sprockets.
