Chain wear & marks on cassette

During my commute last week, I couldn't decide if it was the weather, the bike or me but it was getting tiring riding to & fom work so I decided I would give the drivetrain a once over.

Took the chain off & compared it to a new one & found that it had worn a fair bit

I also noticed these crescent shaped markings on the cassette.

The chain & cassette have done about 1700 miles.

Any ideas regarrding the marks??

1700 miles isn't that much - do you ever ride without oil on the chain? Even a quick 50 miles without lube can kill the system.

I use wet lube given the weather down here.
