Well that got your attention.

Just filling my repair pack with what's necessary should a Shimano 9 speed chain break whilst out in middle of nowhere.

Should I get Shimano connecting rivets, a SRAM Powerlink or a KMC link? Do they all fit?

I think this has been asked before, but just for the sake of clarification.

I have a cheapo chain tool. Do I need a Shimano specific tool to complete the repair?

Cheers

Chris

You will need a chain tool even if you carry a quick link - if only to remove the plate that has failed. You don't need a Shimano specific one or any such fancy stuff.

3 quick links for £4 here: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=871 and make sure you buy the correct guage (9speed).

A couple of spare links (of normal chain to match the one you are running) can be useful if you need to take a section out. The just quick link at either end of the insertion.

These can be put on with your bare hands. Practice before trying an in the field repair so that you look quick and efficient in front of your mates.

I generally make sure that all my chains have one such link in them anyway as being able to tak you chain apart without resorting to tools can be handy.

Be careful when taking out a quicklink not to drop half as it will get lost in the detritus of the roadside.

Thanks TimP. Went for a Park Mini-Chain Brute in the end; I'm trying to use Park tools wherever possible to build up a good set.

I also carry the Park mini chain tool (cheapest place to buy it was the local Halfords ;) ) and the KMC links. If you want to take the chain off for cleaning, the KMC chain pliers make it a lot easier (Parkers International are selling them for £7.25).

SRAM 9spd PowerLink saved my life on the TNRttC (thanks MacB!), got a powerlink on the other bike as well. Seem good, and cheap too. (and you can take them off with your hands, no tools required)
