I've just changed my chain after only 1000 miles and on a 23 mile ride today had 2 instances of chain suck. Does this mean I have to change my granny ring as well? It's a Defy 2 2011 Compact.

It certainly sounds like it. Chain suck is caused by two things; an excessively worn ring whose teeth are so hooked that they refuse to let go of the chain or; a burr. Or (three things...) a bent tooth. Burrs and bent teeth are often the result of cack-handed shifting ut they can also be caused by chain suck. Once it starts it's virtually imPossible to remedy without replacing the offending ring. Luckily they ain't expensive.

Get it fixed before you wreck your stays.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Have you lubed the chain - or are you relying on the factory lube for awhile? I have had problems with a 'sticky' new chain, solved by applying lube.

you should buy a chainring that is exactly the same as the old one to avoid compatiblity issues - doesn't sound like you need to worry about buying something special considering what the bike is used for.

Check the chainring over for bent teeth and burrs or hooked teeth. If it's steel, straighten the bent teeth (Sheldon Brown has a guide to this somewhere) or file off any burrs.
