Heya, I currently have a specialized sora sport 2011 with the original sora compact group set on. I have done over 3.5k miles and the chain has just snapped....not bad going I guess... I am looking into what to do now, and i am thinking that it might be best to either upgrade the full group set to a tiagra group set or just fit a new chain and cassette?
Could you tell me how much each of these options is likely to cost?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

New chain and cassette will cost you under £30, assuming I've specced it properly. The next question is whether you want to do it yourself and whether you have the tools to do it. I should imagine the LBS will at most charge another £30 to install it, or you could buy the required tools for around that much to do it yourself.

So far as upgrading the entire groupset is concerned...well the sky's the limit really. I've been toying with the idea of upgrading my Triban 3, you can get a 105 groupset for £300 on Ribble. Quite how much it'd cost for someone to install it all I don't know, but I know I wouldn't like to do it myself!

Personally I'd say it's better value to just replace what you've already got. If you want a new groupset, it would probably be better value to buy a new bike entirely. That's my opinion anyway, others might differ wildly!

You might get away with just a replacement chain but buy a cassette anyway in case new chain skips.

Simple to do yourself with a few tools.

why would you spend a whole load of money 'upgrading' to Tiagra, unless your Sora groupset is well worn, which after 3500 miles it shouldn't be.
The difference between 2014 Sora and Tiagra groupsets is very minimal and you wont notice any difference whilst riding.
Just buy a new chain and cassette. Next time replace your chain after 1500 miles!

Even if the chain as been cleaned and lubricated regularly? What are the telling signs that the chain needs changing ?
