Had a lovely 60 mile route planned this morning through the wilds of Surrey. Got 20 miles in coming down Leith Hill, slight sudden incline so knocked it down a gear and powered on. Well that was the theory... the bloomin chain snapped instead. Nearly had a fun SPD moment just as a car was passing.

As I haven't picked up a powerlink for it yet (idiot I know) I then had a fun walk into Dorking where Mrs. Wades (the 5th emergency service) picked me up.

Anyway, the bikes my 2010 Secteur Elite (105 and 10spd chain). I've covered around 250 miles on it since I picked it up as clearance bargain a month ago.

Evans have said they will take a look at it tomorrow when I pop it in. Do you guys and gals think there will be much of an issue with getting a replacement out of them?

Unlucky. The only times I've had a chain snap is when I haven't quite pushed the joining pin in fully.

If you haven't touched the chain since you bought it (i.e. haven't split and rejoined it) then Evans are obliged to give you a replacement, as it evidently wasn't fit for purpose.

Was this Coldharbour Lane descending towards Dorking where it happened? I hate coming down that hill; narrow,. poorly surfaced road with blind corners. That is the road I came off when braking and gashed my right elbow two years ago.

I have only had a chain break due to a fault - weak side plates. I do know of many who have broken their own chains by putting on pressure while the chain was derailling, instead of waiting for the change to finish. That would be down to poor gear-changing, not a failure of equipment.

Hi Al,

Thanks that gives me a bit of hope!

No it wasn't Coldharbour Lane (but I do know what you mean), and you were obviosly lucky not have got of worse down there it's a nasty little bugger even in a car!

It was Leith Hill Road leading into Hollow Lane (Has some similar nasty narrow sections to Coldharbour Lane though). Hollow has a short climb (slope) up to the A25 that is where it went.

I know what you mean by this but it went after the change was complete rather than during. I think that;s what shocked me as I have done this once years ago on a MTB. One plate is missing completely and there is no twisting on the other remaining one.

Will have to see what Evans think tomorrow.

In your second paragraph you mention a 'powerlink'!
As a newbie what is one, what does it do, do I need one? Thanks

It's a special chain link that kind of clicks into place to link up your chain, rather than pushing in a new pin. Handy if your chain breaks on a long ride. KMC and SRAM use them. I think they are compatible with Shimano provided that you get them for the right speed chain e.g. 8/9/10.
