I know not a lot about the workings of my gears but after my ride today I cleaned and lubed my chain and noticed that when in gear 9 and 10 out of ten the chain rubs on the inside of the front mech , so I rang Halfords and the guy told me that there is nothing that can be done about it . he said he can adjust it but then it will rub when im in 1st and 2nd . this doesn't sound right to me . i could have it looked at at my local decathlon because the guy there is fantastic but this will void my warrenty . am i being fibbed too , or is the guy at Halfords right .

Which ring at front?

It might rub if your in the small ring at front. Avoid large>large, small>small as chain line is distorted.

Hes right assuming your staying in the same ring at the front, the last two gears at either end should not be used with the opposite chain ring to avoid chain rub which reduces efficiency, is noisy and can reduce parts life.Otherwise its just a case of adjusting your high and low stops and getting your front mech cable tension set correctly.

Use the park guide linked above.

You need to adjust it so that 10 only just doesn't rub - this gives you maybe till 2 or 3 before it will rub on the big ring (note don't use 1 or 2 of the big rear sprockets when on the big front.

Similar goes if in smallest chain ring and largest rear sprocket. Use the low screw so that the front mech is just off rubbing. You'll then find 8.9.10 might rub, but you should be switching to the big ring before them.

Depending on the levers, you can tap them a little to adjust the trim - i.e. a small tap to move the mech just a notch or two on the ratchet.

Fast and careful!
On some shifters you get the option to trim slightly ie on tiagra, just move the lever slightly,I get this on my genesis cx
