Chain Rub Grrrrrrr!

For the life of me, I cannot get rid of the chain rub on my bike. Components are Shimano 105 5700 10 spd. compact. 11-28 cassette, 50-34 compact crank, FD 5700. I get rub at the innermost gear selection (small front/large rear) and the outermost gear selection (large front/small rear) Limit screws are set OK. No tension in cable when in small ring.

The only fix I can think of is to set up to allow the chain to rub when in the small ring up front as I don't use it very often, thus allowing more clearance when in the large ring up front...but this goes against the whole idea of having two chainrings.

Fixes, anyone, please?!?!?!

If it rubs in very lowest and very top then that sounds a lot like the limit screws are set wrong. What happens when you unscrew the L limit screw and tighten the H screw on the FD?

Which side of the FD rubs?

Messed with the H and L limits and cable tension. A lot better, but still rubs. I've noticed it's actually intermittent, so it may be a wonky chain or chainring or the derailleur cage rotation needs a tweak.

Thanks for your reply, @Broadside

Loosen L limit screw slightly to give silent access to largest rear sprocket then at the point that the chain rubs on the front mech you should already have changed to the larger front ring. Adjust the H limit stop to allow silent running on the smallest rear cog then again the point at which the chain rubs on front mech is beyond where you should have changed to the small front ring.
If you can get all gears on the rear using both front rings "you're a better man than I Gunga Din" as this should not be possible. Google Cross Chaining.

May actually opt for a different cassette. I'm running on the 50 at the front a helluva lot more than the granny ring, and only using 2/3's of my cassette when in the 50 front.

I used to have a Raleigh Team Banana back when I was about 16-17. I believe it had indexed friction shifters at the downtube. Loved that bike.

Come to think of it. I had a Raleigh Equipe, too.

Another thing to check is the set of the front mech. I had a similar problem on my wife's 105 triple set-up. You have to get the front mech astonishingly close down to the big ring to get the chain running in the "wide" part of the changer.

One of my retro bikes is the red Equipe (Super-Equipe according to the Raleigh catalogue) Lovely ride but a touch heavy mind its got a rack and full SKS/Bluemells mudguards as well as a Brooks B5n saddle and still got the suicide levers on.

Yeah, I hear ya @Apollonius. I think it may be a case of the position of the FD. I'm down to about 2mm or so over the large chainring. It has been lower in the past, but with all this tweaking, it's probably moved up about .5-1mm. I think it's a case of taking the FD off completely, cleaning the seat tube as the FD may be finding itself falling into an indentation in the paintwork or something stupid.

I've never had so much trouble with an FD in my life.

Hahaha! I had the standard white/grey/yellow Equipe. Ahhh, those suicide levers!!!! I think the Banana I had was a different edition to a lot of the others I've seen. Maybe it was the fact that it was a 'Team' as opposed to a standard Banana. It also had plastic indexed friction shifters on the downtube, most others I remember had metal ones. Them were t'days
