The middle ring needs replacing on my Allez -Tiagra kit. Is it worth/possible to just do the middle ring or would I be better off changing the lot?
They're about 5 years old and have done a fair mileage - well the small one has although I rarely get into the big ring!

It's well worth replacing just the inner/ middle, specially if like me it's the one you spend most time in.

Do bear in mind that they come in two 'types'; type A and type B. I can't remember which is which but one is for double and one is for triple set-ups. The triple type has shift ramps to lift the chain from the granny which are missing from the double ring type.

It''ll tell you on the packaging.

Moving it 2 holes may just shift any slight deflection in an old plate - as it's an inner there won't be shift ramps.

Replace the worn rings only....

inner ring is usually steel - although smaller in size, will wear less than the larger alloy rings.

Richp, it may not still be the case, but Chain Reaction were cheapest for chain rings last time I looked at prices - might be worth a look.

I agree with JtM. If you're lucky you may even get something in their flood sale. I've been stocking up and apart from some minor rust and lack of original packaging, most of what I've bought has been close to mint condition. One chain that I bought is quite rusty but I'll see how bad it is before deciding whether to send it back
