Chain replacement woe’s

I make a point of checking my chain on a regular basis with my park chain wear tool. But, I’ve been doing a lot of extra miles lately and when I checked it, the “1.0” side of the tool slipped in easily – to indicate a new chain was needed.

So – I fitted a new chain today, and it slips badly when I select a chain position that utilises the smallest “13” cog on the rear cassette – when I push hard on the pedal stroke?

Apologies as I guess this has been asked before – but, do I now need to buy a new cassette having left it too late to fit a new chain?

Advice really appreciated..

I asked a similar question a few months ago, and got the reply that I was expecting.

Your cassette is probably worn.

I bought a new one for £30 ish and the chain then worked fine. I now replace the chain after it reaches 0.75.

You must replace the cassette quickly or you will damage the new chain.

^ what he said  If you replace the chain at 0.75 you can extend the life of the cassette. I believe some people are getting a ratio of 1 cassette and rings to 3 chains via careful monitoring and efficient compnonet changing.
I think 1:2 is proabably more realistic though.

As said its more than likely the cassette is worn, in theory replacing the chain at 0.75% rather than 1.0% may prevent this. Other problems may be cable snag and/or the rear derailuer needing cleaned and lubed (you change the shifter down but the deraileur doesn't move until you hit a bump or something but if its only happening with 13t, thats unlikely.

Shame that single sprockets are not more widely available. It sounds like your 13 has experienced more use than the others. If so it would be an obvious candidate for individual replacement. I seem to recall that Rose sell sprockets individually. But i could be mistook.

thanks for everyones advice - If anyone does happen to kow where you can get just a 13T - that would be much appreciated......

I had a look at the Rose web site, but couldn't see it listed?

If it only slips on the small/small then it probably needs a few links removing and/or the dérailleur B tension(or whatever it is called)changing.

ok - think I'll give a new cassette a go - does seem a shame you cant source single campag (or compatible) in the UK..

Interesting that it is your 13t that is worn out, not riding a compact by any chance? The common problem with compacts [if it is, and if it isn't you must ride with a slow cadence or you ride at 30mph everywhere] is that peeps tend to stay in the same chain ring for 90% of the time and just move up and down the cassette.

If you ride mainly on the smallest cog on the back then it would wear more, is that the gear your in most?

If it were me I'd put the old chain back on and run it for another 500 miles then stick the new chain back on with a new cassette.
