I use Finishline wet lube. I tend to re-lube the chain after I have cleaned it (when it is mucky) or if I here any chatter. Seems pretty good to me lasts well and certainly better than the spray lube I had before.

I gave up on wet lube - it just turns everything to a sticky guey mess.

I use Muc off dry lube (spray), however next time I will be buying the non spray version as it does tend to go on places you dont want it to go.

I use car engine oil, applied via an oil can.

What's wrong with that? Surely if it's good enough to lubricate a cam chain turning round at 4,000 rpm, it should be ok for a bike chain turning round at 100 rpm?

I am no expert at all and I find the prices of items specifically for bikes a bit of a rip-off. The only thing I could possibly think of is that in a car engine it is not exposed to the weather so may come off easier. Having said that I just use Wilkinson's own cycle lubricant that is made by Weldite, it only costs £1.17, about a 5th of the price of a similar sized Finishline one that I used to use. I have had no problems with it.

Progold Prolink. Little and often. Use a luber or hypodermic, a drop on each roller, wipe clean.

+1 Been using it for years and used to bring it back from the States before it was available here.

You answered your question yourself. A lube optimised for high temperature low pressure high speed bearings is not optimised for low temperature high pressure low speed bearings.

I use old-fashioned chain oil from the LBS, it does fling off onto the chain stay if you don't wipe the excess off though. It seems to keep the chain smooth and silent for about a week of commuting and leisure riding before needing to be wiped off and reapplied.
