Took my bike into the local bike shop after one of the spokes came loose they replaced this and serviced the bike at the same time. Now when I change gears on the bike, the chain slips on the same three gears i am hoping that teeth are not worn, I have only had this bike since september. Its a viking road bike - any ideas

I guess your gears need adjusting. Try looking on u-tube 'adjusting rear derailer' or

your chain shouldn't be worn after 6 months unless you've used it for a fair bit and then you tend to get the chain jumping on the smallest cog. Check also that they put the wheel back on properly!

Good luck!

If you've just had the bike serviced, my idea would be to take it back.

It should function flawlessly after a service. They should have test ridden it to make sure. If there were other issues at the time, it's in their best interest as well as yours to point them out and have them seen to.

6 months is more than enough time to wear out a chain / cassette. It all depends on the sort of mileage you've been going.

What did they do to service the bike?
If they've fitted a new chain it's highly likely the new chain will slip on the worn gears.

I would assume they've had your casette off to replace the spoke. Which will go along way to explain why your gears aren't quite indexed correctly. However, you would expect the gears to click / miss-shift rather than the chain to slip.

Redbike - they wouldn't have taken the rear wheel off if the damaged spoke was on the front wheel would they ? Or am I being thick again ?

Take it back and get them to right it.

Take it back but it sounds like a worn cassette. As said though, normally smallest cog not 3 of them...
Out of interest, what model Viking is it?

Well yes it does, strictly speaking. But you'd have to be really caning it to wear out a chain/cassette in six months. I do 75 miles a week year round on London's filthy, gritty roads, and my chains/cassettes last a helluva lot longer than that.

I'm with earlier posters - unless they gave you the service for free, I'd definitely go back and say 'it's not working right'. If they're any kind of a decent shop they'll want to put it right - and if they did charge you, they pretty much have to.

At some point you might like to go and have a look around cycletutor.com, and have a think about DIY. It's actually a lot easier than you might think, and very satisfying. You can save shitloads of money too.
