I have promised my better half a brand new bike so that she can accompany me on my outings. She would like one with a chain guard as she did not like the idea of bicycle clips (although I can't think why). My question is, how easy is it to clean and lube the chain? Does the guard have to be taken off or can it be done with the guard in situ?

Depends onwhat type of chainguard you had in mind. I have two old hub geared Raleighs with the hockey stick type chain guard and it's still easy enough to lube the chain. They unscrew with only two scres anyway and hub geared bikes need very little in the drivetrain maintenance department. I'm not sure how you would fit a chain guard to a derailleur geared bike.

The fully enclosed type found on old English roadsters and the like are a PITA to put on and off.
