Yes removing chain and using an old rag etc is the best option - but I'm in university digs and chain cleaning will often be carried out in my bedroom, so the less mess the better, hence my interest in a chain cleaner.

I've always found chain cleaners to be really messy and certainly not something I'd want to be doing in my bedroom!
When I was at Uni I used to clean/lube the bike outside and if it needed a qucik clean +1 for baby wipes, although the lube and cloth is probably the better solution!!

I like a nice thoroughly cleaned chain - usual technique is remove chain, into bottle with degreaser, shake every 5 mins whilst cleaning the rest of bike, pour degreaser into another bottle, pull out and clean chain, mickle method and go.
Rag and wipe is my usual uni routine, and then the bike gets a proper strip down and deep clean every 10 weeks or so when I go home - might not be able to go home as much this year due to postgrad studies so looking for another solution. Hopefully we are in the process of securing a bike workshop, but we'll see.

Good to know the chain catcher isn't all that I thought it to be. Perhaps if done over a washing up bowl?
