I'm not clued up on bike limbo so bare with me, this is 2nd bike I've got which has option for 3 gear on centre sprocket but theres only 2 cogs, does this mean i can upgrade from 18 speed to 27? or do they just use same gear changers on handlebars to save money for production, i have cboard hybrid comp and its on its way to a total customization

yes they do use the same gear changers to save costs and yes you can put an extra chain ring on the crank

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Might need to have a new bottom bracket that has longer spindles to fit the wider triple chainring.

Don`t boardmans come with compact chain rings anyway?

I am pretty sure they do so you will have a wide spread of gears anyway, adding another chainring is only going to give you a slightly lower and slightly higher gear and lead to a lot of gear multiplication with gears that give the same effective ratio from different front/ rear combinations.

Not worth doing in my opinion for the marginal gains you are going to get compared to how much halfords will charge you , i would put money on the cycle plan not covering you for modifying the bike as well so you would be paying labour as well.
