Hello all. The cd burner on my laptop seems to have stopped working. It will however still read cds and even rip them but will not let me burn. I have tried on various software but to no success. Anyone got any idea what the problem could be? And if not how much is it likely to cost to get replaced?

P.s I am running on a vista setup if that means anything.

It might be worth using Control Panel to uninstall it then restart the laptop, allowing Vista to find and re-install the drivers just in case it is a software problem. IIRC, a lower powered laser is used to read and a higher powered laser is used to burn CDs/DVDs, so it may well be a hardware problem with the latter.

Mine did something similar a while ago,and i gave it to a mate for spares,he later told me he downloaded the firmware drivers again and it was as good as new,he went onto the makers site for them,im not sure what they are,but it worked on mine when it seemed to have packed up?

Dont really fancy rebooting vista as I dont have a rescue cd about.
Might just get an external when I have the spare cash. Though the usb ports on this are not fantastic.

??? You do this everytime you switch your laptop on unless you leave it in "sleep" all of the time.

It might be a software conflict. The 1st thing I try when I have an issue like this is a "system restore", it restore the computer to an earlier date when things were working but it doesn't affect files, they'll still be there. In XP its Start/ Program/ Accessories/ System Tools/ System restore.

Tried that no luck. Its weird because nothing I can think of caused it. It just stopped burning. Cant see how it still rips ok though. Pain in the arse I have some music that needs burning and I cant afford a new drive at the moment.
