What about your front chainrings, how many teeth on each?

wow, 30/26 is a pretty low bottom gear, you must have some big hills near you. Don't lose heart if you're just starting out, you'll find it easier as you get fitter (which happens quickly when you start cycling).

Doubt it is worth changing. Lowest on mine is 28/28. Keep at the hills. I find practising 7 or 8% gradients and 200ft hills on a regular basis helps.

I'm not being funny, but you are using the 30/26 gear on the hills aren't you? (Little front ring, big back sprocket.) I always thought an understanding of gears was pretty intuitive but I've met a few people who completely misunderstood how they work.

indeed, small at the front and big at the back. you may be able to fit a 13-30 shimano cassette to lower the gearing further, but i would recommend keeping at it and getting better.

it worked for me.
