Hi guys

A couple of questions.
I have recently fitted a new chain which is starting to jump under load.
So I figure I need a new rear cassette.
could some one please look at the attached photos and tell me.
A/ is the cassette worn out.
B/ are the chain rings ok.
C/ the bike is fitted with a sram rear deralleur so do I need a sram cassette or will any 8 speed cassette do.
D/ finally is it a cassette or a screw on freewheel hub

Hope some on can help.
Cheers Jim

It's hard to tell from the pictures whether the cassette is worn, but the symptoms, especially after fitting a new chain, say that it is the cause. Check for a tight link in the chain as well though, just to be sure.

I'd not change the chain rings just yet - they look to have plenty of length left on the teeth. Of course, if it still skips, then change them too.

In my experience a Shimano 8 speed works perfectly with a SRAM 8 speed mech. The spacing is the same.

I can't tell from the picture whether it's a cassette or a freewheel, although my guess is a cassette. A picture with the wheel out of the frame, looking straight on to the cassette/freewheel will help.

Hi Tim

Thanks for the reply.
I have checked the chain & can find no tight links.
I have attached a couple of photos of the wheel removed.

Cheers Jim

Cheers Guys.

Thanks for all of the replies
Guess its time to buy a new cassette.
Does it have to be a sram cassette or will any 8 speed do.

cheers Jim

Clean the cassette first off, then post new pics. Hard to tell being so dirty, but it looks like the cassette is worn.

As has been said, any 8 speed cassette will do, depending on what gearing you want.

Your style of riding should reflect in your cassette. Road or everyday riding, you wont need a 32t. If your going off-road and cycling up steep 'off the beaten track' areas, then a 32t will help.
