Carrying the bikes

Hi,

Our bikes will accompany us on holiday but we really are not prepared for carrying them. The car is a Skoda Roomster, for those unaware of this model, it has a vertical rear hatch and roof bars (plus Thule cross bars) but no tow-hitch.

The rear seat is occupied, so no chance of carrying internally. The added problem is age, lifting a bike onto the roof of the realtively high vehicle is going to be problematic.

Without wishing to push in the most obvious. direction, what options remain for carrying our two bikes across Europe? Suggestions for really good roof rack or rear carrier would be much appreciated as the offerings at Halfords were not inspiring.
