I've got a Carradice Pendle on its way (would have been here already, but for the snow). I'm going to use a Minoura Space Grip on the seat post to support the bag in a levellish position. I want to put a lower dowel inside to stop the back of the bag sagging, with something lining the bottom to stiffen the base.

Like someone did on this Barley:

and like Acorn Bags do with their Large bag:

My question is: has anyone got any idea what sort of material I should use for the base stiffener, and where can I get it from?

We use hardboard, covered with A4 polypockets.

I have a Pendle but have not felt the need to stiffen the base... you have me thinking now, perhaps I should!

I'm planning to use one of these, a Minoura Space Grip, to support the bag:

Lighter than a Bagman, and better for attaching the strap to.

Corroboard or corrocard (not sure what its called exactly) The corrugated plastic sheet estate agents use for their signs. Theres a signwriters I pass now and then have a skipfull of the stuff. I think it can be hot glue gun stuck together if you need it shaped.

Thanks Domestique. Hardboard, hmmm. I didn't think of that; I was thinking it needed to be something that was a bit flexible.

Sorry, I should have added that I dont line the sides of the bag, just a piece of h.board for the base.
Btw the corrowboard sounds an ace way to go. Might have to sneak out later and cut down the 'To Let' sign down the road

No not the sides, just the base.

I think I'll give this corrugated plastic a try. It seems to be mostly in large sheets, and you have to get 10+ at a time, but there's someone selling some on eBay right now: 5 × A4 sheets (which should be just about big enough). Does 4mm thick sound about right?

If I've got the right stuff, it's called 'Correx'.

Another alternative, if you live near a shop that does bits for R/C models and so on, is "plasticard". Comes in varous thicknesses/stiffnesses.

corrugated plastic would be a good material to use. however i'm not sure why is that needed, any hard object inside would make rattling noise against it. i've got barley bag, used it only twice as it's a bit too big for my needs. both times i've stuffed it full, so a base stiffener wouldn't have added any value.

Thanks for the suggestion PpPete. I think I'll try the Correx first though: I think it might bend round the dowel (so the dowel screws hold it in place) better.

zigzag, you're right: when you have the bag stuffed full it isn't needed.
