Carnauba wax on your frame

A good friend of mine is a professional car detailer. He dropped by today and put some carnauba wax on my bike frame. Apparently, once set, it really protects the paint work from chips etc. Looks bloody lovely!

The only thing that protects paint from chips is not hitting it with anything!

Like a microscopic layer of wax will stop a stone ;0)

Haha, you read that on some car discussion forums, they're all convinced that a layer of polish will prevent stone chips LOL!

It gives a good shine - you use the wax block to remove ground on dirt. This will be a polish with some added..... Any car wax is great ! I use the Turtle Wax Platinum (with carnuba) on the car - gives a great shine.

Sorry your mate is talking out of his lower hole. I own a couple of car detailing businesses dealing with very high end cars and collections all over Europe and get through many thous of carnauba wax a year and not once has the wax protected anything from stone chips. Yes it will protect it from the elements, rain, snow, hail, sun and wind including UV damage to the finish but it will not stop a stone. Oh and no matter how good the wax is if the preparation isn't spot on it will only sort of look OK.

Prepare poorly and a £7000 pot of wax will look shoot, prepare properly and a £1 wax will look the dogs nuts or a £7000 wax will be mind blowingly beautiful and last ages no matter the weather.

Bit of a waste on a bike as you're bike isn't sat outside all the time, and surface area is small. Just use a regular or quality wax. Like has been said, these car detailers use carnauba wax blocks to remove surface contaminants, then use various waxes after.

TBH Mr Sheen original is good on bikes - removes oil etc, not messy and leaves a silicone barrier - i.e. water/dirt just splashes off and it doesn't get as dirty as a non polished bike as the dirt washes off...easy....

It also removes brake dust marks off sidewalls - great if you have coloured tyres...

What they mean is that wax sets up surface tension, which makes water bead up and roll off, protecting the bare metal that's exposed by stone chips. So waxing does prevent rust.

I forgot to say what I use:
Wash 'n' Wax from the Poundshop.

A light rub all over with the sponge and the bike squeals in delight.
No effort at all to get those sky blue Michelin tyres looking like new again.
