planning on going to the alps in the summer and would like to take a bike, but as there'll be five of us and a boot full of luggage i'd have to take the carbon bike to keep weight to a minimum.

would the bike be ok on the boot rack for such a long distance? i will be covering parts of the frame with pipe lagging (foam) including the top tube to protect from vibration

the bike is a massi team

If you are that worried about the carbon frame (and I wouldn't be anyway), then I don't see why you have to take the carbon bike to keep the weight down.

Car + 5 + luggage will probably be 2 tonnes, so the saving in taking the carbon over another would be, what. around 0.1% of the total. Skip a breakfast stop, you'll save more.

the car is a punto with 17" wheels
we went to the same place place last march (skiing) and the body hit the tyres a few times, i've since raised the rear of the car 10mm.

but my main concern is whether the frame will be damaged as it'll be suspended from the top tube for over 12 hrs and about 760 miles almost non stop
