A hand-me-down from my son, who can't remember where he got it from and needless to say has lost the instructions:

Can anyone ID it and, if possible, point me towards how to use it? Logo on the straps is "PH".

I'm sure the PH are the initials of Paddy Hopkirk, a former rally driver, who put his name to various items.

The foot pads and the foamed tube should be on the car, so turn the footpad bar 180 degrees so that the pads and foamed bar are in the same side.

the rubberised stick out bits are where the bike is carried. The 2x flat plates with 4slots in should rotate from the 11 o’clock position in the image to the 4 o’clock position and are secured with the rotating clamps on the inside of the rubberised and foamed bar.

the straps loop around the top and bottom of the boot lid/ hatch.

I think! 😂

The bit with the foam on, can this be rotated 180 degrees. Then those support. brackets will push down to secure the tubes that carry the bikes.

Yes, I see what you mean. Although it's not explicitly shown in the instructions, it does look as though the two main tubes can be rotated 180° relative to each other, and then the smallest U-tube with the plastic pads can also be reversed.

That would effectively give you a choice as to which of the two contacts with the car - the foam tube and the pads - was the upper, and which the lower.

TBH I'm slightly dubious about using it at all, having looked at the steel hooks that are meant to fit over the edges of the tailgate, with the potential for chipping the paint. Particularly as I can easily get 2 bikes inside the car with the back seat down (Toyota Auris).

I used a rack similar to that in my early days of carting bikes around. I stopped using it when I found some of the straps dangling after going over bumps which unweighted the carrier allowing the straps to work loose. It’s nice to get something for free but if you care about the bikes or your car paintwork there are much better options about. Inside the car has always got to be the preference!

I had one of them bought in the late eighties.

i found that unless it was on really tight the rack leaned very slightly when you went round corners so that the arms that cone out of the foam pad rubbed on the bodywork. At the time we had a Ford Orion so it was on the boot

I used a rack like that decades ago without any problem apart from me worrying about it dropping off.

If you can fit bikes inside the car I would rather do that.
