I need to transport an "open frame" bike on a Saris Bones 3 car rack. This is the bike and this is the rack.

I'd like to like to know whether I need to shell out for one of these bars which create a temporary top tube for ladies bike. The top tube on the bike in question doesn't seem that low so I might get away without the bar.

Cheers,
Barry

I found that on some ladies bikes, you can fit the "prongs" into the rear triangle at the back, and the frame at the front making it secure.

You should be able to do it but the back wheel will stick right up in the air, unless you can do as Cunobelin says

What would be the result of having the back wheel stuck higher up? I've read that these bars are necessary for ladies bikes, but why if all it means is the bike sits more level? Will the rack be unstable? Will it mean other bikes won't fit on the rack? etc etc

I have never had a problem, it just means positioning bikes carefully

As for stability... I frequently put recumbent bikes and trikes on these without issue

I used to put swmbo's bike with the wheel up in the air,
no biggie, but my bike was on there too never tried it on its own ( added weight/stability )
I did manage to get one of the prongs in the rear triangle a few times,
I now have a tow bar mounted rack that holds the wheels now as the kids bikes would not fit on the prongs:headshake:
This:thumbsup:
