Anybody done this? I have the possibility to be there and ride with 40,000 others a 109km route around The Cape. Entry is still open for overseas riders. Negotiations are still in hand with Mrs Gti because the following Wednesday is Gti junior's birthday. Just got to wrangle it with the boss to be in SA on business for the 2 weeks beforehand.....

Here's the route:

I did 4 of these in the 1990's.

Fantastic event - well-organised, spectacular route on closed roads (including motorway sections), great atmosphere - you'll love it!

I did it in 2008 -- its a great event, superb roads and very well organised. My advice is:-
  • Get in a seeded group (they usually allocate a couple of groups for international entrants) - you will find that you will be riding with better riders and will not be held up with social riders
  • take care, as with approx 30,000 riders ther are some whose ambition exceeds their bike handing skills
  • hydrate - it is usually hot
good luck

Thanks, having done a couple of these big rides last year I'm mindful of the need for getting away before the slower riders.

Flights and Cape Town hotel are booked, entry for overseas riders is guaranteed but I need to get that sorted. Just got to get some miles in here at home!

My South African friends tell me it can sometimes be wet and cold - I'll be taking some warm and dry kit as well as summer stuff.
