i recently purchased a giant defy two with around 80 miles of use so was like new. since owning the bike ive always struggled to get it off the lower front small mech to the larger one, it can take me ages to change back up and is becoming a pain in the ass anyone advise me be greatly appreciated also if im doing aroung 75-10 miles a week on bike how often should i have it serviced and what should a general service include?? would i be better off servicing it myself if so do i need anything specific toolwise, i have a topek tool kit with most stuff on i think, cheers folks

The cable has stretched. Screw the L/H downtube adjuster anti-clockwise till you take up the slack and all will be ok. If there is no D/T adjuster undo the clamp bolt on the front mech and pull the cable tight with a pair of pliers.

You will eventually find that the rear cable will also suffer some initial stretch making it hard to get the larger cogs on the cassette. As well as a D/T adjuster there will be one where the cable enters the rear mech, screw either one (easier using the adjuster on the mech) anti-clock again to rectify.
