Hi all,
Picked up my new carbon road bike from Halfords yesterday and tonight wanted to put my new pedals on. Applied grease as normal. But both shop temporary pedals were overzealous tight. But got the left side on easily after using WD-40 to get it off but the right side just won't go on at all.
I've not tried to force the right side on but it's obvious on inspection it's been threaded. So I'll take it back. Potentially a new drive train.
How can I prove it wasn't me? I've put many pedals on over the years and am convinced this had been threaded during their PDA.
Thanks.

Any swarf on the original pedal, if so, make sure you point that out.

I think you will struggle to prove that you didn't do it I'm afraid ? Maybe threaten to demand your money back as the bike isn't fit for purpose ?
You won't need a new drive train. Just a new chainset at most.

Thanks - yes, that's what feared. Maybe on picking them up i should have asked them to put the pedals on. I paid substantially less for the bike as they had me kept waiting 4 months for it.

All you can do is tell them you’re an experienced cyclist and know how to put on a pedal correctly. Unfortunately one of the problems with Halfords when kac handed Kevin from auto parts comes over to help with the extra work load on bicycles. Perhaps you could even suggest that to them?
Sorry, it’s a PITA.

A pal of mine had a similar issue with Halfords. He'd bought a road bike from them and when it came to taking one of the pedals off, he couldn't. Eventually turned out it had been crossthreaded on assembly; by Halfords. He still had a row with Halfords who were convinced that it was he who'd done the damage despite his never having taken the pedals off since he'd bough the bike - !
Hmm.

It just amazes me that this is going on for years. They can't even assemble a fork the right way.
I think this down to the type of business Halfords is. It’s a large chain of stores (largest cycle chain in the U.K.) which sells two very different types of products. Staff seem to be shuttled between the two as demand dictates. I’m sure they must have a high turnover of staff too so perhaps the career prospects are not appealing or properly implemented. All this might be not important to the owners who are a venture capitalists CVC Capital Partners and has now been floated on the stock exchange so their main consideration is to keep their stock holders happy with increased profits

Carlsberg option, If no joy with the shop try fitting the pedal in from the inside (wrong side) to clean out the threads and then it may fit in from the correct side of the crank arm ?

What a brilliant idea! I'd never heard or thought of that one! 👏👏👏
