I would love to see him go for it and break it. It would be great if he did it in Manchester and not Italy as Manc has a reputation for being a fast track

Is the record still Boardman's?

What has happened to Obree's attempt?

Sosenka; I've just googled it. he was subsequently banned for doping but his record stands though.
Boardman has the record for non-standard bikes but I assume Cancellara would be after the 'Merckx' record.

I get the impression the hour record doesn't quite hold the prestige it once did. Riders don't seem quite as interested - I wonder if it's because there are now two categories which sort of dilutes it?

I think it does still have the prestige. A lot of stars don't do it because of the damage to their reputation if they fail. I'd bet my house Armstrong thought about it but abandoned the idea after realising he was likely to fail.

Plus it's HARD. Didn't Merckx say his attempt took a year off his life?

In a way, I'm glad Obree didn't go for another attempt, though saddened by the reasons.

Hutchinson's book shows how hard it is. I reckon Fab has what it takes if he can get the position right.

49.700 so approx 50 MPH for an hour. You have to admire the effort they put into it what is cancellara's average for a TT of 50 miles. Considering for the hour record they have to use a bike of the same design as Moser used other wise it would be classed as best human effort i.e. he wouldnt be able to use his TT bike.

Obree to me will always be an inspiration.

It's kilometres, remember, not miles.

In the final time trial of the 2008 Tour, Cancellara won (well, came second to Stefan Schumacher... so won) in a time of 1:04'11" over 53km. That's an average speed of 49.546km/h.

In the final time trial of this year's Tour, Cancellara was second to Contador in a time of 48'34" over 40.5km. His average speed was therefore 50.034km/h.

Cancellara won the Valencia time trial in this year's Vuelta over only 30km in a time of 36'41". That gives an average speed of 49.069km/h.

EDIT: And - most impressively of all - at the World Championships time trial this year, Cancellara won in 57'56" over 49.8km. That's an average speed of 51.577km/h.
