I have a hybrid which currently has 700 x 42 tyres on it. Most of my riding will be on tarmac (with a fair mix of mud and horsesh*t) so I want to replace these with something more road suitable. The rims are marked as 622 - 20. So what would people recommend? I don't need high performance so budget options may be acceptable but I've no aversion tro spending more for something that's better.

You probably wouldn't want to go too small, so how about something like these. You might need bit of tread as you say you will have to put up with some muck on the roads. 28mm or even 25mm would be fine.

"28 or 25 would be fine"? It seems a large jump from 42 to 25 to be using the same rim (not that I know as I'm still learning about all this stuff)

I wouldn't go as far as 25mm personally.

32s or 35s would probably be a good compromise.

Other tyres to look at would be the standard marathons which are a bit cheaper, lighter and not much less puncture resistant, or one of the Continental Contact range

32s are the best compromise in my experience.

I agree with this. I've 32s (Conti Contact) on my Ridgeback Supernova and they are excellent on both road and rough cycle paths.

I've got Vittoria Randonneurs on my hybrid. They're about £15 @ Wiggle, and I only get punctures when they're completely worn through and I've been too lazy to replace them. I use the "City" ones, but they have some others with a little more tread to help with the mud.
