Can I use this fork with this headtube?

Its been a while since I rode and am looking to get back into it!!
Can anyone have a look at these pics and tell me if I need to get a new Fork with a steerer tube that isnt as wide?
I cant see how a headset is meant to fit, given the 1mm gap between the headtube and steerer.

That steerer probably measures 1 1/8th in diameter - you need a fork with a 1" steerer ( and a headset if you haven't got one).

Steerers come in two flavours - threaded and unthreaded ( or a-head type) and there are headset types for both.

It's a complicated area - it may be best to throw yourself at the mercy of the LBS.

Agree with fossyant and accountantpete. The articles here might help giving you some idea what is involved in diy. Incidentally the forks in your photo still has the crown race of the previous headset on.

Right then looks like Im going down to my lbs to sort out a Fork with a 1" steerer.
Its weird, but suddenly, it all makes sence!
