Maybe a naive question but would I be able to compare the number of teeth on a cassette or ring to give an idea of their size?

Example- if my bike had rings with 48/38/28T could I compare that to a one with 50/38/26 and say the small would be an easier pedal, middle would be exactly the same and the big ring slightly faster?

Or do the rings/ cassettes change size making any comparison pointless?

I second the above for Sheldon's Gear Calculator. I have it bookmarked on my computer. In fact Sheldon Brown's entire site is a wealth of information on all things to do with bicycle mechanics.

So long as you can separate the facts on St Sheldon's site from the opinions, some of which are presented as fact and are more that a little odd imo, it is a wonderful resource.

thanks for the advice and the link- some interesting stuff on there, some taken with a pinch of salt.

Typically I took the bike into town this evening and forgot to have a look at my current set up, next time!
