For what it's worth I use these: link, on my knockabout bike and have found them to be good for a mix of on/off road use.

They also resist punctures quite well (1 slow puncture in the last 3000 miles) and aren't too expensive. The size you'd need from the list for MTB fitment is 26x1.75 (47-559)

1.75 should be fine. MTB rims will take a surprisingly wide range of sizes. If in doubt check your wheel rims. The size should be marked on them, probably in the format 559x??. I'd hazard a guess that you'll have 21mm width rims, which is the same as my bike had originally.

Schwalbe Land Cruiser would also be a good choice, with more of an off road bite. What price have you found them at? My info is that they are about the same RRP as the TourRides.

Cheap TourRides available here if it helps.

Slicks will be fine, I use them on my road bikes down here and they stand up well.

All my bikes (except one) use road tyres which may not have a corresponding MTB size. The one I use on the hybrid is Maxxis Overdrive and they are fine, but not slick, but they roll well especially at higher pressures. So get the smoothest tyre you can if you want less rolling resistance and don't get too hung up on makes, it doesn't make that much difference IMO.

They are both good tyres and have their strengths. It might help you decide if you answer these two questions:
1) What is your idea of off road? If it's a gnarly high speed trail centre run or blazing a trail through the woods you might be better off with the Land Cruiser. If it's tow paths and bridleways the Tour Rides will cope just fine.

2) How much on/off road use is the bike going to have? If it's about 50/50 consider the Land Cruisers. If it's more on road than off, the Tour Rides will probably be better having low resistance and putting more rubber on the ground when cornering on tarmac.

I hope this is of use.
