Can anyone recommend a windproof jacket?

I'm looking for a cheapish simple breathable windproof jacket/jersey. Preferably something packable. Not interested in warmth or waterproof, got those bases covered, but breathable is a must.

I was looking at Cannondale's Pack-Me shell at ProBikeKit and that looks like the sort of thing that might do the trick. Any other suggestions?

Edit: 'roadie' fit is essential, I can't stand flappy fabric!!

Have you looked in your local Decathlon ? I spent far too much in Orange a couple of months ago.

Yes, I looked in Decathlon yesterday afternoon. I guess I'm a bit of a snob because I really didn't fancy the BTwin branded clothing - it looks a bit cheap and gaudy to me.

Windproof - i.e. a normal top that's great on sub 4-5 degrees days...yes...believe it or not - Decathlon.....

Had one and the zip broke last winter - 2 year g-tee - replaced..... new model uses YKK zips. It's great - I can go out in just a base layer and the top...

PS not packable - proper jersey...... as above then it's a race cape !

Don't use it on plus 5c days - you will cook, and don't put it on until the last minute...

It breathes like a normal top, but air temps are important...it does what it says on the tin.......

They (Decathlon) do respond to consumer issues, as a pair of shorts I had that the insert failed - got to shop to tell me the lot weren't sold any more as they were faulty - £35 top of the range shorts lasted 1 month... very comfy, but fell to bits in the wash...

I've just looked at Decathlon's website and quite liked the look of the Jeantex Arles 'race cape' - £45 in the UK.... and a whopping €70 in France! Even taking into account the fact that the arse has fallen out of the pound, that's one helluva price difference!

I have a Gore lightweight shell/jacket and I wear it most of the year. It seems to have an ideal balance of wind resistance and breathabilty. I only wear a lined jacket when it's zero or lower.

I'm not a fan of goretex, even paclite. I'm not convinced of its breathability and I think it's expensive. I reckon pertex is a much better fabric for those that warm up quickly!

I have a Montane featherlite (and rate it, it's what I use at the moment) but I find it too flappy.

I'd be happy to find other jackets that worked and were cheaper.

With you there, 100%

I have a Rapha soft shell, stupidly expensive in my opinion but the damn thing does work so I can't really complain.

I've got a Rapha Classic softshell and it's great. I'd also recommend Castelli's Espresso jacket (retails at £200, you can get one for £140 on Wiggle) or I can sell you one - used by me once for £100 (medium size). Castelli's jacket is a tighter fit than Rapha's - I preferred more of a 'jacket' than a windproof 'jersey'. If you're interested in mine send me a message soon - I'm going to put it on eBay this week.
