Not sure about books, but there are plenty of web sites, starting with the late Sheldon Brown an amazing resource, Park Tool (Bike repairs), Bicycle Tutor and many more. Also ask questions in the Know how section of this site. Hope that is of some help...

Good basic well illustrated one is Haynes The BikeBook. Make sure you get the latest edition (5th? at least). Otherwise +1 above posts, esp. ParkTool website.

Hi, I'm a total newbie here. Have just got myself a hardtail MTB so am now trying to learn how to maintain it.

I have read that two books are the recommended 'textbooks', Hayne's bike book and "Zinn and the art of mountain bike maintenance".

May I know which of these would anyone recommend? I'm someone who have no idea even to just change the tire tubes (well i'm still learning).

Both. Start with Haynes. But first have a good look at the websites recommended above. Parktool make it really easy for you by having a 'print friendly' setting.
