i've got 19mm mavic rims on my commuter. they came with 35mm gravel tyres which i switched out for some 23mm rubino pros which i basically wanted to get the use out of. been running them like that for the past month.

last week, the rear punctured repeatedly, all on the rim side. suspecting a rim tape failure, i replaced the cheap and nasty oem rim tape with some velox, but still got the same problem. in frustration (and having run out of tubes), i put the 35mm tyres back on.

the front tyre was ok; i tend to run 120psi at the rear and 100 at the front with the 23s; was it just that the rim could not take 120psi without causing the tube to puncture? the 35s are 65psi max…

Nope. Check for sharp edges everywhere. Rims can take 120 psi. If not they go bang and sllit.

Some rims can't take much pressure. The Mavic disc-specific rim on the back of my commuter is only rated for 100psi - the rim, not the tyre.

I have some cheap BMX rims on a Raleigh Twenty. Put more than 65psi in and the brakes drag.
