Can a bent chainwheel be straightened?

Just fitted my old single speed chainwheel to my new frame, which is when I remembered that it never was exactly straight. The distortion isn't big - maybe 3-4mm from one side to the other - and it never actually mattered on my old bike, but the clearance on this new one is much tighter, and it's just rubbing the frame. Might I be able to straighten it by sticking it in a vice and manhandling it? Or would I just break it? (It's a lightweight Sugino...aluminium, I'm guessing, tho' I guess it could be some kind of alloy.)

Any suggestions appreciated..

Leave it on the bike and use an adjustable spanner (put it over the edge where it's bent and close the jaws) as a lever to straighten it. I done it loads on MTB's and never broken one.

Hi. Thanks for that. Sounds encouraging! Have to admit I don't totally understand the 'how'...

Is it basically about putting an adjustable spanner over the section you want to bend, tightening it on, then giving the handle a bit of a heave in the direction you want to go?
