Can a 10 spd casette be fitted to 9 spd Hub?

Looking at getting some wheels that have a 9 speed hub fitted to the rear wheel. These are road wheels by the way.

Can a 10 speed cassette be fitted, or is the hub too small for that? Shimano parts by the way

simple answer is yes.

Instead of making the freehubs bigger to accomodate 10spd they just made the gap between each sprocket on the 10spd cassette slightly smaller - so same freehub/slightly more squashed up cassette.

Actually quite the contrary, Shimano 10 speed cassettes should have an extra 1mm spacer when fitted to 8/9 speed Shimano hubs; in case yours is missing, or never came with a 10 speed hub.

Yes, you'd need a ten-speed chain.
