Campagnolo 980 rear derallieur or shimano light action

Hi need a bit of advice.

I'm busy rebuilding an 83 raleigh rapide. It has campagnolo 980 gear on except the rear mechanism which the previous owner replaced with a shimano light action.

Anyone any experience with either and which may be the best. I've seen a campagnolo 980 rear mech on eBay but don't want to replace if it's worse than the shimano that's fitted.

The rebuild is for my son so it's not 100% required but the if it's equal or better then I would like to try and get the gear set.

Frankly, I'd use something like a Suntour Vxgt or a Suntour Cyclone; IMO, they work better than either of the ones that you've mentioned and may be picked up cheaply on Ebay.

Read a review on either - they are decent quality and work cleanly & reliably. Check first, whether you need a short cage or long cage derailleur.
