campag record 2006 clip on front mech

Hello everyone and merry christmas

With my 2009 alps plans in mind, I have recently acquired a bargainous 2006 record triple chainset and long cage rear mech. I currently run a record compact double front derailleur (braze on for a carbon frame) with a centaur compact double. This won't work with the triple.

So I have discovered the 2006 record 'clip on' triple front derailleur, and I'm trying to work out what the 'clip on' means. To me it looks like the derailleur comes with a band-on clamp which can be removed leaving you with a braze on front mech. So if I buy a 'clip on' I can just ditch the band and attach it to the existing gubbins on the frame.

Am I correct? Please let me know!

Thanks.

I think (but please don't take this as gospel) that band-on or clip-on mechs are a different design from braze-on ones. Whilst braze-ons can be used with a separate band, I don't think braze-ons can be separated from their band.

Yes, the body of clip-ons is a part of the actual band - the braze-on is completely separate. Braze-on is lighter but a clip-on is lighter than a braze-on + band - make sense:smile:

Always best to buy a braze on version as you can get clip on adapters (even Campag make them in balck or silver )to convert them if the frame has no braze on.

Anf the Record 2006 triple front is a very nice piece of Ti and anti-friction treated kit.

RobS - my frame will only accept braze on front mechs. The seat tube is elliptical carbon fibre - or at least it's a funny non-round shape that I don't know the special word for! So it's got a couple of bolts into the seat tube, to which is attached a plate. You can bolt the mech onto the plate.

I suppose my question is if I bought the 06 record triple clip on, could I remove the band attachment and replace it with the braze on attachment from my 06 record compact front mech? I've checked the tech info and the parts look identical, and interchangeable.

Initially I thought the braze on attachment had a slightly different part number for triple compared to the other varieties (possibly a geometry tweak required for clearance) , though the band on parts were exactly the same part numbers for all the Record and Chorus varieties, however comparing with the parts catalogue of 2005 I think the different part number in 2006 was a typo as they are the same for both triple and double/compact/FB etc in 2005 etc....therefore I'd say GO FOR IT!!!;)

I concur with your assessment of the situation.
Marvellous
