Hello all

the rear wheel mysteriously went badly out of true on Thursday and on examination a spoke had come loose from what I know to be the flange, I left it outside the LBS this morning to hopefully be trued and have just had the less than pleasant news that the flange is separating from the hub and Campag will now only supply Record hubs, LBS, knowing my budget have offered me a rebuild using a Miche hub for £125ish, they said the Miche hub was lower spec than my previous Centaur hub

joy

a quick look at ebay tells me there's nothing in a 36h rear campag hub other than vintage stuff

anyone got any ideas or sources for a cheap rear 36h campag compatible hub?

I'm only really a commuter but I do enjoy going fairly quick and I like the odd longer ride

Campg really do seem to be giving on on supplying the regular market, tsk

thanks

hmm

is a pair of new wheels entirely a solution given I'm paying for a new hub plus spokes and a rebuild?

a pair of apparently lightly used khamsins, would that be an answer to my problem and leave me me a spare front wheel?

a quick chat with the LBS has added the even better news that my Condor Fratello frame is a slightly non standard 130mm width rather than 135mm, thank gawd they volenteered that snippet when I ran the wheel by them

Total cycling have a set of Centaur hubs for £110 here. I don't really know a lot about campag but I did once run a Miche hub and it only lasted me about 3,000 miles. That's compared to the 105s I have now which are both over 10,000 miles (although I have just had to replace the freehub body on the rear)

thank-you

I've spoken to two LBS and both made doubtful noises about the miche hub, bearings especially

that looks like the way to go then and try to sell on the spare one

will those suit my 130mm frame? or is that nothing to with the hub itself? I hate finding out new things about the bike I knew nothing about before

thanks martin

Can't help with the hub width I'm afraid. My first thought would be that a frame could flex 5mm though but as I say, I could be catastrophically wrong about that!!!

yikes

so the hub is directly related to the frame width? I was hoping the wheel was built up the required width, or something, wheels have always been a black box to me, seems odd the hubs don;t display a width

Bearing in mind I think we should both wait until someone who knows pops along to confirm, I would say that a frame is built to accommodate a certain width of hub. That width would then also determine how many gears you can have so for an obvious example I wouldn't expect a frame designed as a single speed to be able to accommodate a 10 speed 105 hub.

I do have an inate ability for destroying things on my own bike by tinkering so I really would wait for more comments preferably from knowledgable people. I'm sure someone will be along in a minute.

it's cool, relax, a bit of googling tells me that hubs are made to different widths and the wheels as a result of that

thanks for your help, I've email Totalcycles to ask the question

oh well, after considerable googling I've accepted that a rear campag hub that's not only 36h hole but also 130mm is a bit of a rare beast, and then expensive

a few fair reviews of the miche hub have cheered up up a bit so the LBS have kindly agreed todo the work now and get paid at the end of the month, bless 'em

so if anyone does find a centaur 36h 130mm hub in their spares box, please don't tell me

back early today so dropped into the LBS on the way home, if the new hub arrives tomorrow as expected I#m back on the road for Thu morning, which is nice as the £6.60 train fare plus £1 boris bike fee is way over my budget

the mechanic showed me the old hub, 5mm odd of the flange is missing where two spokes used to be attached, no idea how it could have happened, both the hubs came from a slightly secnd hand pair of wheel from my work LBS, oh well

Yes, that did slowly dawn on me, my LBS's or at least the no2 chap there showing his MTB bias

Annoying because martin's link to the two Centaur hubs would have done for me, other than I don't have the £100, I could have had another Centaur hub plus a spare front one to resell for 'only' £50 more than the Miche hub

oh well, thanks for updating my terrible misleading thread for the benefit of some future misguided fool
