I am running a Campag Mirage 9 speed rear mech short cage with compact front.
Largest rear cog is 26.Can i increase this to 28 or would this be beyond the rear mechs capacity.
Hope you can advise

It's marginal - the chain wrap would be 32 - so you might have to avoid 50t front and 28t rear.

Personally I'd give it a go and then get a medium cage rear mech if it didn't work out

Whether you can or can't is partly a function of the distance from the centre of the top pivot bolt on the rear derailleur, to the centre of the wheel spindle. Not all dropouts / hangers give the same dimension.

The issue may not be chain wrap, it may be the amount of clearance between the teeth of the top jockey & the biggest sprocket when you are in the small ring.

Be very cautious running a combo where you can't wrap enough chain. If you run a short chain and you grab the big-big combo by accident, it's going to cost you, big-time. Usually, rear gear and often rear wheel, nearly always a chain, if the chain and cassette are worn to each other past a certain point, a cassette too. In really unfortunate circumstances it can cost you the frame, too - so if in doubt, my advice is "don't do it" ...
