I'm awaiting arrival of old steel frame(reynolds (531??) tubing), a freebie from a neighbour, I'm hoping to build a low budget SS for fun and commute, my query is...I have a Fulcrum wheelset from my 10speed roadie which i was hoping to make use of, it has a campy freehub, I've read its better to use a dedicated sprocket with spacers as opposed to a disassembled cassette with spacers.

Can this be done? I've very limited(read 'no') ability but have help, Is it true about the dedicated sprocket?

Please help...

When you have got the frame, there are a few things to check. First is whether it has horizontal dropouts, second is whether it has 130mm rear dropout distance, third is whether the existing wheel is 27" or 700c, if 27" whether the brake pads can be lowered by 4mm (because your campag wheels' braking surfaces will be).

None is a deal breaker if not, but will give rise to complications.

Thanks for the advice, hope to have it by the end of the week, it will be slow time...only because of work/family commitments, really I'm itching to get my hands on it, no doubt I'll be posting again needing advice as this is my first project.

never used a sprocket from a cassette as its cheaper to buy spacer kit with new sprocket unless you have a good used or new cassette you can strip for the 1 gear you want to use , and then just spacer or waser it to siut chainline etc etc . easy work

Colin,

Is that a sprocket from a cassette then?
Yes. I started with a 12-23 cassette on my multi-geared Basso, then changed to 13-26 and then to 14-28. It meant that I had two fairly lightly-used cassettes lying about to take a 15-tooth sprocket and lots of spacers from.
I've just remembered that I did have a problem when I first rode the bike as a singlespeed. The chain came off on the singlespeed's test ride so I took a spacer out either side of the 15-tooth sprocket and replaced them with 17-tooth sprockets from the spare cassettes. The extra sprockets act as guards to prevent the chain coming off and the idea works perfectly. That photo must have been taken before I did made that change.

This is what I mean:
