Recently a friend was discussing how he needs to lose / control weight. Aside from a good diet I was encouraging him to get a bike. This set me to thinking about how many calories does the average cyclist burn.

I found this link to a calculator http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.php how realistic is this. For my own riding - average 16mph - it suggests I'm burning 800 calories per hour.

I see it onlys works for averages speeds of between 11 and 17.5mph.

Hi,

Don't you mean "Calories burned".

Anyway, there is a feature on the Cyclist's Touring Club website called PowerCalc.xls.

This tells all.

That sheet is BANG ON!

When one gets used to it, try entering a series of rows for the same bike and rider details.
In the first row, enter a reasonable cruising speed, eg 24 kmh. ( 120 Watts ish )
In each successive row, increase the slope by 2 %.
Adjust the speed so the Wattage requirement remains the same. ( 120 Watts ish )

Some folks say the legs should not notice the slope if the gearing is the correct. This implies the Wattage and cadence should be the same for any slope.

Look at the speeds you must enter to achieve the same Wattage.

The legs WILL feel the slope because a cyclist does not slow THAT much when climbing.

As for Calorific requirement, I think the kCals/km result is the most useful.

Depending on the type of ride I take on the day, but from rough figures (170lbs and av of say 14mph) I burn somewhere around 600 calories and hour. This is about 10-20% less than those computers/nav equipment which seems about right.

Jimbo's sheet reckons you burn 333 cal/h
