How wet does it need to be before you reach for the jacket? Are they only shower proof or will they stand the odd heavy downpour?

Reach for the jacket?
They are more than shower proof, and will stand a heavy downpour or three. Eventually though water will find a way in.

I use the Alpha Jersey, I can not recommend it enough best piece of kit I have ever owned never got wet with it
