This is starting to grate on me now!

I'm after a reliable iPhone app that doesn't cost the earth, but can let me plan routes, stays with the map so I can see what's up and coming on my planned route, give me the usual stats (mph, mileage, calories, elevation etc) and let me export the data - not too bothered about the social network integration, but it would be nice if possible.

I've tried the following:
  • iMapMyRide (free) - does not follow me on the map - otherwise this would be great. Not sure about the paid version though. Doesn't let me set up routes.
  • Team Sky Training (£2.99) - GPS cuts out half way through a ride, resulting me having to reset my iPhone. An absolute nightmare when you're on the saddle and have thick winter gloves on. I've reported this, so hopefully I'll get something back.
  • Cycle Watch Lite (free) - again, does not follow me on the map - otherwise this would be great. Not sure about the paid version though. Doesn't let me set up routes.
I use Memory Map to look at different information, but it's not a cycle meter by any stretch!

Anyone else got any ideas? What do you use?

Cheers - BinBag

I've got MotionX GPS but to be honest, I've not really made much use of it. Generally I just ride and don't worry about the stats. I did use it to track a FNRttC and it seemed to work OK, but then I hadn't preloaded a route and wasn't trying to follow it.
Might be worth a look though.

I don't use iPhone any more but a big +1 for Motion X from me.
They're constantly updating and adding to it too.

The free one always used to be pretty good to give you an idea before buying the full version.

EDIT: I don't think it gives calories burnt though,, although you could always calculate that easily yourself with an online tool.

I use RoutePad. It's pretty cheap, and there is a free lite version which is fully functional but only lets you store one map. You can create routes on it or imoprt a GPX file and it shows the routs and your position on it. Also gives how far you have left to go and even how much climbing you have left, although not convinced of the accuracy

I've tried a few, of the free ones I think Runkeeper and iMapMyRide are probably the best. I also have Cyclemeter which cost £2.99 and is pretty good except for a time lag on speedo.

Cheers for the comments people - I've done a bit of testing on the apps you've mentioned and I have to say, Motion-X GPS is the best by a mile so far, so cheers Panter and BigSteev!

It doesn't give you calories burned by I can calculate separately as you rightly said.

It blows the others out of the water - great GUI, not clunky at all. you can import GPX files and follow them although I've yet to test this in full. The GPS accuracy is exceptional as it shows you your mph, elevation, mileage + more.

I also tested 'The Bike Computer' but this was way behind some of the others I'd tested.

So my recommendation is Motion-X GPS at £1.79 - BARGAIN!!

Glad you like it, I must see if it's available for Android.

As I say, the other thing that really impressed me about it was how often it was updated, the developers really seem to care about giving maximum value for money.

Just downloaded Motion X and I've yet to have a proper look at it but just wondering if there is a way to plan routes on a proper computer then import them to the iphone. Been playing with the waypoints but it seems slow compared to something like Map My Ride, or even Google Maps and doing it on the small screen makes it even worse,

I imagine I must be missing something...?

Did over 1000 miles with the free version of MapMyRide and it is good for a free app, just a bit hit and miss trying to get it going and very inconsistant with its gps coverage, sometime taking 10 mins to get warmed up! I liked it mostly because I could keep a record on Facebook of every ride I had done, total miles, calories etc.

Facebook then got rid of sidebar apps....

Then spent £5.99 on 'Bicycle' because my mate said it was good, It wasn't....

Short story long and five apps later, Cyclemeter is the app of choice now. The phone itself syncs it's calender with the cycle calender so you can easily check any ride on any day that you've done, including all stats and maps using the iphones map app (I'm a poet and wasn't aware). For example, I could go back to a 30 mile ride in October, see how many miles, mph and how long it took, then at a quick touch see the map I rode and even graphs of elevation and spped, awesome.

100 miles a week and five apps tested over 12 months, 4800 miles later (give or take a few holidays) and It's 'cyclemeter' everytime, until something better comes out.........'Cyclemeter 2' !!

Cyclemeter here too. I've not tried anything else, nor do I think I'll need to tbh.
On Sunday gone I plotted a route using bikehike, downloaded it in gpx, emailed to myself, opened the attachment in cyclemeter and it was all spot on.
I should say I didn't have to refer to the route cause I remembered it so I don't know if the app shows real time positioning.

Second on cyclemeter. I love that app, never let me down and seems to be pretty accurate. You can not plan a route beforehand, but you can add new routes by riding and saving them. Then there ist the possibility to race against yourself on those routes. Let's you see your improvement nicely. Can only recommend that app. Good for checking up on your weekly, monthly and annual milage, too.
