I've recently got a new bike computer that measures cadence. On a trip out the other day my friend and I were trying to stick to a cadence of between 90-95. We were then changing gear (up or down) to keep the cadence in that bracket

Is that the idea?
Should I be aiming for a higher / lower cadence ?

Do whatever works for you! (That is about the range of cadence that I tend to aim for, except on very steep hills.)

As said, do whatever works for you; I like to be in the zone between grinding and spinning. Grind too much (spin to slowly) and you put too much strain on your joints; spin too much IMO you waste too much energy spinning round and not actually progressing. I also like having the flexibility to up my cadence when I need to accelerate.
