How often should one change the gear cables? My Specialized Allez is now 5 years old and has covered about 7500 miles and have noticed that changing from the middle front ring to the big one is sometimes not so smooth ( although I don't use the big ring very often).

With a change of cable comes an increase in cycling pleasure. The gears just work so much smoother on new cables. Time for a change and do it more often than 5 years.

Gear cables tend to break inside the shifter, which can be awkward to sort out, so a change after a reasonable service life is a good idea.

Bike gone to LBS; cost to replace cables and reset gears: £15. Will get it back tomorrow. Happy with that. I also realised I need a new front tyre so will get it Monday. ( on order). All condition specialized 700 x23.
