Cable Routing for Aero Brake Levers...

I'm considering putting one in the same position as a bar-end gear lever on normal drop bars (with the lever blade pointing forward). Why? To enable the operation of both brakes independently using one hand (I'm using a cable splitter at the mo'.) I'd probably have to cut the bar end down a bit as well.

Do the cables route through the bar end and under the bar tape (exiting via hole), or are they completely externally routed? Google and forum searches haven't turned up anything of use. Pictures would be nice!

... a "normal" aero lever has the cable outer leaving the hood part close to the bar tubing and is then under the bar tape.

If I am understanding what you are suggesting I think you'll have a problem with a lever "facing the wrong way" as the cable outer would have to turn through 180 degrees immediately to take it along the bar - and I would suggest that the inner cable would be trapped.

A better solution might be to fit a TT type lever - that fits inside the bar end with an expansion bolt and the cable departs, again under the tape, in the correct direction with a straight pull - something like the Dia-Compe 188 Reverse Lever ... and you may be able to fit a tandem double cable straight to it. Thanks, Rob -- my question was about "'Reverse bar-end' types as used on TT bikes."

Tandem cable is not an option, since the idea here is to have two independently operated brakes. If the points of the levers are close enough, then I can operate both or either with one hand.

I took the plunge anyway, and ordered a pair of MOst levers from Parkers -- only £19.99 -- I take it they're symmetrical -- I could kit out two bikes with one pair?
