Cable installation on Aero Road Levers

Is it necessary to fit ferrules to the end of the cable outer that fits into the back of the Aero Lever? The one I removed had no ferrule, but my other bike with V type brakes has ferrules at the cable entry point.

The outer is routed through the groove in the drop bars, held in place with electrical tape and overwrapped with bar tape.

The principal functions of the ferrule are to stop the housing cover fraying and to limit the quantity of muck and water getting in between the housing cover and the cable itself.

That being the case, if the housing end socket allows it, and if the ferrule is of the right size (able to go fully over housing) and type (hole does not drag cable - people often use gear ferrules with holes too small for brake cables), I would use one.

Aero lever in drop bars...how so? Surely you mean bullhorn/base bar?

Use a ferrule if possible as RAFN says...all the levers I've used have a snug fit with one.

I'm fairly certain that the last time I replaced my cable outers I didn't use a ferrule. Purely because the cable outer fits snugly into the back of the lever and as you said the rest is covered in leccy tape to hold in place and then bar tape. With all this protection there's no chance of muck easily getting in there. Also I think it was a fairly snug fit into the back of the aero lever without a ferrule. I'll double check this tomorrow though!

I think the OP's aero levers are something like pictured (rather than levers for aero bar). They were common in the late 80's

I am not sure if the tapes have anything to do with it since, for these levers, iirc, muck or water can enter between the housing and cable through the front when it is opened to the elements when the lever is depressed. But of course as I indicated earlier if the housing socket has no room for a ferrule then one shouldn't use one.

Try to add a ferrule to the cable end going into the brake lever. If it doesn't fit then it is not supposed to have one. I was fitting brakes cable to a new pair of tektro aero brake levers last week and was wondering the same thing. However, my ferrule just would not fit into the guide hole therefore did not use one.
