Cable clatter?

I've been trying to diagnose why the front of my geared bike rattles and clatters so much, I have carbon forks and on the whole the ride is really smooth, but on crap roads the front of bike bike clatters like a wrongun!

I 'think' the noise might be coming from the point at which the brakes and gear cables reach the front of the bike frame. I don't think there's much I can do to move the cables so are there any other methods for cutting out the cable clatter?

Put a layer of tape around the headtube, then a large cable tie, loose to start with , around the circumference of the tube. Use two more smaller ties to loop the cables onto the larger cable tie, then cinch up the big one, and adjust the smaller ones to keep everything tidy.

Some rubber frame protectors where the cables are rubbing or hitting against the frame may help silence it a bit.

Clattering from the front of the bike also makes me think headset.. Are you sure that your headset is nice and tight with no play?

Frame protectors, tape and gently bending the cables so they don't touch the frame (PS not for the ham fisted as you can wreck the cable travel)

i'm surprised you can hear the cables knocking against the frame, i've never had this. if it good to use pards or helicopter tape to preven the frame being rubbed and worn away by the cables and brake hoses. ... if you are cheapskate, 2 layers of insulation tape works just as well.

I've had a really good look at the cables and they are tight enough to the frame that they've made their way through the top few layers of paint, so probably not clanking.

I'm going to remove the silly rings that come with presta valves, they don't serve any function do they?

I may be mistaken I often am, but don't these hold the valve straight in the rim, preventing the tube from splitting, where it meets the valve?
Have ye got any nice routes you can recommend around the county on the Essex borders? As, as a preteen living in the area I was a tad to young to thoroughly survey the area and on a subsequent visit I found the Halstead to Sudbury road a trifle scary.

Dear lord that road is terrifying!

Do you fancy joining us for a forum ride Sunday after next?

25th November. Tempting, although I fear that Ipswich is beyond my range at this point in the year. Indeed Sudbury was then my final destination, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I and the Diamondback hot footed it back to Liverpool street on the train.
Sounds like a good early bird blast up to Orford the other week. I've been a soloist, for proper cyclng since those early Suffolk days, but remember a good rabble from then and some decent day trips.
I am however looking at possibly two excursions to and through the county for 2013, one to the lands north of Thetford and another of a vaguely coastal nature, for now though I'm sticking south of the estuary and moving on from the classic and knowhow forums.

Apologies about going completely of Forum topic and a bit of a rant really, but its good to hear of others jaunts.

So whereabouts on the Essex / Suffolk border do you live? It's quite a big border

Hi Andrew
sometime native to Nr Sudbury, although I'm now based in southwest London/Surrey. So the estuary I refer to is not the Bure valley, although I should think that the Bure may well be a basis for a good route. Indeed coastal or river rides often work well, I understand the Lee valley may prove a good northen exit from the smoke, but shadowing the A12 on a random northeasterlly coarse is not such plain riding, what with hitting heavy traffic and so on.
It could be a laugh posting details before any departures, as this may provide more continueity, than tagging randoms on the road which never works as well in an urban environment.
